I cannot add the 'featured image'/'thumbnail' feature to a custom post type after it was already saved with that setting set to false. I'm looking through the database and I do see that the thumbnail feature is set to true, but it does not add that feature to the add/edit screens for the custom post type.
I checked screen options - it's not there.

Found the problem, but not sure if this will only be a problem when using a custom theme which explicitly defines the post types that may use thumbnails.
In my case, I was using Alyeska, which defines this
add_theme_support( 'post-thumbnails', array( 'post', 'slide', 'portfolio-item' ) );
Since my custom post type was called dogs, no matter what i would do, the featured image possibility did not exist.
Please advise on whether this should be reported to the Alyeska theme developer.
