Every bit of information I have provided is correct,Twitter is up and running, but still when I press the connect to Twitter button I get the following message:

"Authentication Failed. Please check your credentials and make sure Twitter is up and running"

    *Bump*

Having the same issue, and I am wondering if it has something to do with OAuth support for PHP. WP Support center breaks down Twitter Tools pretty nicely here:
    http://wphelpcenter.com/plugins/twitter-tools/

And While I'm not certain, I am gonna run that fix by my server admin and see if that might be a possible solution.

    More soon.

Authentication failed messages usually mean that Twitter cannot identify the application that is calling it. Make sure you have the correct API keys and tokens from Twitter. You get them after signing up at: http://dev.twitter.com/apps/new

I was getting this same error for the last few weeks. My information was all correct.

My solution: I have a deicated server and I updated PHP and rebuilt Apache. I can't tell you what I might have checked (it does require Curl support apparently), but after this, it would be able to authenticate.

HOWEVER, even though it authenticates now, it still isn't posting anything.

Same here. How is WordTwit working, and Twitter tools not working? There should be something wrong with Twitter tools ;)

I have gotten the same "Authentication Failed. Please check your credentials and make sure Twitter is up and running" for two different sites on two different servers. Have checked and double-checked that all OAuth keys are correct.

Very frustrating that I can't get this to work. Any suggestions?

Same here. I asked for support, and they asked me 100 dollars just to assess the issue. Time to check out other twitter plugins!

    There are some inconsistencies here...

Twitter Tools Options Page is asking for:

    2. Copy and paste your consumer key and consumer secret into the fields below

    1. Twitter Consumer Key
    2. Twitter Consumer Secret

    3. Copy and paste your Access Token and Access Token Secret into the fields below

On the right hand side of your application page, click on 'My Access Token'.

    1. Access Token
    2. Access Token Secret

But on the Twitter Application page, only these exist:

    1. Consumer key
    2. Consumer secret
    3. Request token URL
    4. Access token URL
    5. Authorize URL

Twitter Consumer Key = Consumer key
Twitter Consumer Secret = Consumer secret

Access Token and Access Token Secret is under "My Access Token" (menu right above).

There is the Access Token and the Access Token Secret.

I activated it successfully on two WordPress installation. However it seems to me, that all is case sensitive. If something have upper-case letters, then you should also use it. The same for lower-case letters

Access Token and Access Token Secret is under "My Access Token" (menu right above).

This doesn't exist. Not on my application page.

I deleted my app, recreated it four or five times, I've double checked, triple checked all tokens and secrets...and I'm still getting that damned "Authentication Failed. Please check your credentials and make sure Twitter is up and running" error.

It's been three frustrating weeks now.

    @neononcon:

Try cleaning your browser cache (cookies included) and then try again.

  15. Make sure that your Twitter application is set to read and write.

Yes it is set to read/write.

  17. Just out of curiosity, see if you can get this plugin to work:

I cannot get twitter tools to work either... same issues as all above. Simple Twitter Connect, however, works like a CHAMP!

Its funny...I actually have hosting accounts at two different places. one of them is 000webhost and all of my blogs there will not authenticate but this one VoIP Review Twitter is hosted on a different, paid host and as you can see, it is working with no problem. This makes me believe that the plugin is fine but the host is the problem.

As someone said above, curl is required and it seems to me that there is some php setting that is preventing it from working on certain servers.

Update: I checked to see if curl is enabled on the host where twitter tools cant authenticate and sure enough curl support is enabled. i dont think its curl.

I wound up using the AutoTwitter plugin. Not as feature-rich but works like a champ right out of the box.

    well my oAuth authentication worked
did not get any errors of any kind but
my twitter-tools widget is not getting any of my updates
i cant go back to the older twitter-tools because twitter changed the api login so no more pop-up logins so there for the older plugin is no help.

my ? is how long do i have to w8 before this is fixed?
or do i just need to start looking for some kind of alternative plugin?

Same here. Switched to shorten2ping using ping.fm. Works like a charm! Plus you can post to any other service as well. Goodbye WP-Twitter and twitter tools!

The latest version of Twitter Tools uses OAuth for authentication. This worked fine for me on WordPress 2.9.2. When I upgraded to 3.0.1, Twitter Tools stopped working at my blog http://www.shekhargovindarajan.com. Note that the version of Twitter Tools I’m using is 2.4.

Next, I followed the steps mentioned at http://www.shekhargovindarajan.com/wordpress/a-perfect-integration-of-wordpress-and-twitter/ - refer to Update (November 15, 2009). But this time, I faced a different issue.

The authentication (the first step before setting up the plugin) kept failing saying “Authentication Failed. Please check your credentials and make sure Twitter is up and running”.

After hours of troubleshooting at the code level, coincidently I happened to check my server’s time (system time). It was lagging behind by several minutes. Updated my server’s time (via ntpdate ntp.ubuntu.com) and voila! the authentication worked. The sidebar is showing the latest tweets now.

Yet to see if the daily digests will start shooting up again.

With reference to my previous comment: since October 4, the daily digests are posting regularly !!SOLVED!! :-)

Dear Lord, it was the server's time all along; after creating a ticket with my hosting provider asking to update the server's time (it was 36 minutes behind), authentication worked...two months of headaches have officially ended. :D
