   WE run a rather secure server. We'd like to get direct updates/installs working on our new install of wordpress.

   I created an account root, with the same root password, and I still get this message :

   Downloading install package from http://downloads.wordpress.org/plugin/google-sitemap-generator.3.2.4.zip…

   Unpacking the package…

   Installing the plugin…

   Could not create directory. /home/host/prod/html/lab/wp-content/plugins/google-sitemap-generator/

   Plugin install failed.

   Return to Plugin Installer

   Is there something I should look at/test?

   what is permission on plugins folder it should be 755

   It is 0755

   /home/host/prod/html/lab/wp-content/plugins/google-sitemap-generator/

   looking at this path you have lab in html folder so the question I have is did you install all your wordpress folder in html as that should be your root

   no, I do not want the blog as my root, it's in a sub folder.

   domain.com/lab/wp-content/plugi....

   so all your wordpress files and folders are in lab directory

   There must be some setting on server you need to change so that wordpress can create directories.
