[resolved] [closed] Trying to Get Event Post Excerpts to Work without a Plugin (9 posts)

    I have been having trouble trying to get an "Event Excerpt" to display correctly. I am currently using the Thesis theme and have the "Design Options" selected to "Display Excerpts."

    This is working great on my blog page and another custom post page that I created, however it is not working on the events post page. I also have copy placed into the "Excerpt Field" found on the post options, but doesn't seem to change the result of the display. I tried changing the template being used on that page but it didn't seem to phase it either.

    At one point I was using the plugin, "Auto Excerpt Everywhere" which worked fine on that one page. However on my other post pages, it would put in a "Read More" link that didn't function. Anyway I ditched the plugin and made it so the "Read More" links worked on my other post pages, but now that link won't show up on my "Events" post page.

    Here is the code I have in place to get my "Read More" links to work correctly on my other post pages: `function archive_read_more() {
    if (is_home() || is_archive()) { ?>
    <p><a href="<?php the_permalink() ?>" rel="bookmark" title="<?php the_title(); ?>">Read the full article...</a></p>
    <?php }
    }

    add_action('thesis_hook_after_post', 'archive_read_more');`

    I know that this is a long post, and hopefully I didn't talk in one big circle. But, basically I just need the post excerpt for the "Events" post page to display correctly. If anyone could point me in a helpful direction that would be awesome.

    Thanks,
    Carter

    Sorry my code posting came in so gross previously, hopefully this will be easier to read.

    function archive_read_more() {
    if (is_home() || is_archive()) { ?>
    <p><a href="<?php the_permalink() ?>" rel="bookmark" title="<?php the_title(); ?>">Read the full article...</a></p>
    <?php }
    }

    add_action('thesis_hook_after_post', 'archive_read_more');

    Hi there carter. Good point here; this is another one which I'm not sure about, but I'd think the plugin should be behaving consistent with how other post types handle excerpts. Let me get Jonah from the dev team to take a quick look and see if anything jumps out at him on this end.

    Hey cartar929,

    I think all you might need to do is add some conditions to event related pages so this function gets executed on event pages too. I've got this little snippet with conditions for the various event pages: https://gist.github.com/2415009

    Does that help?

    Jonah and Rob,
    Thanks for being in touch. But, apparently my excerpts aren't working in this theme (Thesis 1.8.2) and are working in the default 2011 theme.

    I just updated to the newest PRO version of the plug-in and it seems to be putting a template within a template when I have Thesis activated. I am not really sure why? If you could provide any sort of insight that would be awesome.

    Thanks,
    Carter

    Hi Carter,

    This post might be helpful for you: http://tri.be/support/documentation/events-calendar-themers-guide/

    The plugin basically creates virtual pages for the main calendar page, the events list, single days and venues and uses either a plugin provided template (/wp-content/plugins/the-events-calendar/views/ecp-page-template.php) or one of your theme's page templates which you can control in Settings > The Events Calendar > Template

    From there, you should be able to customize things as needed. Thesis is a very customized/specialized theme though so there may be some very specific things you'll need to work with in order to get the plugin working right or how you want... Take a look in our forums for threads other users have posted that also use Thesis: http://tri.be/support/forums/

    I hope that helps!

    Jonah,
    Thanks for being in touch with that information. I tried to manipulate that, "ecp-page-template.php"file to make it so that it excluded the header and footer, but I wasn't able to get anything to change.

    I spoke with Rob through email and he mentioned moving this discussion to the "PRO" forum on the tribe site. So, I recently made a posting there: http://tri.be/support/forums/topic/templates-inside-of-templates/#DiscussionForm.

    Cartar: let's keep your discussion here going over at the PRO forum, and close this one out for consistency sake. Thanks!
