Is there a way to default to the list view of events? We dont have that many events so it makes more sense to have it as a list. Also is there a way to remove the calendar aspect of it?

You can totally change the default view to list, Jantastic. It's controlled under Settings -> The Events Calendar and is one of the first options under the main Events settings tab.
When you say "remove the calendar aspect," do you mean just hide the button so users cannot toggle between the two? If so, this tutorial should help you out: http://tri.be/how-can-i-remove-the-buttons-to-toggle-between-gridlist-on-the-frontend/. Just make sure that you're paying attention as that specific tip tells you how to remove both buttons (and based on your note it looked like you just wanted to remove one of them).
