The Events Calendar
[resolved] Bringing one event category into a page (26 posts)

Is it possible to list a specific event group by category on any given page? I have a $ workshop category I wish to have show up on a page, so that one of several event categories can be listed specifically in that area of my site.

Hey Radmacdaddy. Thanks for the note here. Have you checked out whether you can accomplish what you're going for through the use of template tags, as documented at http://tri.be/support/documentation ? Let me know if that doesn't get you started and I'll see if one of our devs can point you in the right direction.

Thanks roblagatta... I sure would love this plugin if I had the ability to do this by simply placing [event_category] in my post wherever I want. I'm not a php person and having to hire my dev to add that is a bummer.

Or, please oh please, have I missed that option somewhere?

Hey dude. Sorry about the delay; we've been gearing up heavily for the 2.0.5 launch and haven't hit the forums here as actively because of it. Unfortunately given how the plugin is built we actually don't have shortcode support at this point. That may change down the road but in the interim template tags are unfortunately the only way to go.

Sorry I couldn't offer up more here. If you've got any other questions on this or if I can elaborate at all, please let me know.

So, what I really need to do is have a page that pulls in a category under a page description. So, all events tagged/cotegorized with "basic workshops" for instance can be pulled into a "basic workshops" page that includes a descriptor.

    Thanks for any thoughts.

Hey Radmacdaddy. Have you checked whether you can accomplish that using template tags? If I understand what you're going for it should be doable...

Can you give me an example, i think that is exactly what I need. Or point me where to go to get them/examples of them.
    cheers

Ditto for me! I'd like to do the same thing. Did you figure this out or find an example somewhere?

Hey Rob, still waiting on those example links... hope they're simple for this simpleton. ;)

Hey dude. Thanks for the follow-up; we generally only hit the OS forum here once or twice a week. I assume you've already checked out http://tri.be/support/documentation? That's where all the documentation we currently have is stored. The category-specific template tags are detailed at this page: http://tri.be/support/documentation/the-events-calendar-template-tags-general-functions/.

    That help?

I still don't see how that will help.

If I need to post any of those examples in a page, how do I do this? Do I create a template with that code? If so, that seems way much for just a listing of events for a specific category/tag, below say an introduction to the viewer of what they are about to see.

Really bummed you guys aren't implementing [short_codes]. Your plugin would truly be an awesome and very easy to use option.

Thanks for all your help Rob.

I need this too! I run a site that organises 5 events a month at 5 different locations. When events are added they are assigned a category but I can't see anything I can do to list all events in a particular category.

THis is a MUST have feature for this tool... it doesn't seem it could be that tough to implement, but will quickly escalate this plugin as the one to use.

I simply need to be able to say what I need to say for various categories and have them show up below the descriptor. I've tried the "HTML before the event list" option in template settings, but unfortunately that puts the same thing before every list...

BTW, clarelauwerys, you can build a widget doing what you a mentioning, but in the content is the obvious must... IMHO (or not so humble ;) )

Hey Rob, is it possible to list like all the top recent events on a static page with just their title....

How do I build a widget to do that Radmacdaddy?
The category post one doesn't list event categories?

Clarelauwerys, I built a custom menu, then added that custom menu as a widget. IN the custom menu region the event categories are right there to be drawn from and create and easy menu. I know it's not perfect, but it does allow a quick link to the category of events you wish to show... it's really just a work around. Sadly, it doesn't show the events themselves.

Although I have had a custom widget built to show events. I have added a "featured" checkbox to the event post pages so I can show what I want in a dropdown of events.

This is the widget code pulling that info:

[Code moderated as per the Forum Rules. The maximum number of lines of code that you can post in these forums is ten lines. Please use the pastebin]

Obviously that has my own links in there, but replace with your own. Here is the page link to the site under construction:

Yeah, I've done it the custom menu way. Which works for me in so much as I'm organised and remember to add new events to my menus.
But there are 4 other people who set up events and they keep forgetting to do the menu bit. (My site organises events in 5 different locations and each location has its own page so needs to list events for just that one location)

As long as they check the category associated with the event, which they'd have to do regardless to pull the proper event into a list, they will show up on the page the category links to. This way you don't add the events individually, they get pulled in.

Have a look at that code and modify it as needed... obviously I didn't pull the design code out of it...

Thanks for the assist on this, realmacdaddy. Are there still unresolved issues on your site there, clare? Let us know and we'll do what we can to clear up anything that remains.

Having followed all of these documentation links, I still don't see where there is an explanation on how to display by category.

Can someone please post the instructions on how to update a page template to include just one category?

Seems like there's a need for this.

This worked for me. You'll have to change the the $pTitle var to the name of your category.

Thanks for the follow-up, harryvl, and the confirmation.

WebDi: can you give harry's suggestion a go and let us know if your luck improves? Thanks in advance!

I ended up just using the built in category pages then customizing the template with conditional statements to display different content for each category. Not the way I would have preferred, but in the end it worked.

@harryvl, thanks! That code works like a charm. I just used it in conjunction with Linkable Title Html and Php Widget. Does exactly what I need, at least until this feature is built in.

Thanks for confirming as much, WebDi. Glad to hear you got this figured out one way or another. Sounds like based on what I'm hearing from you and karks88, we're in good shape here so I'm going to go ahead and mark this thread as "Resolved."

Thanks to everyone for their support and patience so far. Let us know if we can do anything else.
