   I would like to change the order in which icons appear. Is it possible to do this without hacking into the plugin code?

   Unfortunately, no... It's not possible, but I'm looking at that option for a future release.

   there is a manual way - which isn't too hard

   open the social-widget.php file in your plugin folder.

   Go to line 197 - you see something like this:

   [Code moderated as per the Forum Rules. Please use the pastebin]

   now just rearrange by copy and paste the text-sections...

   This is a bad idea. Changing the plugin files will end up causing you way more problems at the end of the day. Any time I update the plugin, you'll have to go go in and make those changes every single time it's updated.
