I have followed your instructions for creating a new template entitled listingpage.php. You mention that I should be able to get to this page via a dropdown list somewhere. I am sorry to be dense, but where exactly is this dropdown supposed to be?

The drop-down is a list of available templates on the right hand side in the page editor - here is a video for you.
