Simple Facebook Connect
SFC Cannot connect User to site (19 posts)

I have Simple Facebook Connect installed on about 6 wordpress sites. I have no problems with 5 of them. I created an app as I have always done on Facebook. I use my App ID, Key, and Secret and put into the SFC settings page. Now, when I return to my wp site, I click on FB connect button and it displays a pop-up box that asks for access to your wall...but never registers the user on my site. The fb box goes away and the website is still sitting on the home page waiting for you to login, register or click on fb connect.

    Please advise. Thanks otto.

Check that you don't have any javascript conflicts or get any errors in the JS error console. After successful login to FB, the page should refresh so that the plugin can take over.

I am logged into my facebook account already in one tab. I open another browser tab and go to my other page....click on the fb connect...it asks me if I want to allow access...I say allow....the box disappears but the login pages remains. I check fb for allowed apps and my app apears there...but am not logged into the site using fb connect.

    Strange.

Did you check the javascript console? What happens if you refresh the login page? Are you using the latest beta code (0.999)?

Didn't see any js errors. No...0.25 is installed. Where do I get the new one? I just typically update from WP Dashboard.

By the way...0.25 is on all the other sites as well with no problems.

Refreshing the screen doesn't do anything to help. Check it out... http://www.modelpeek.com

    Thanks.

Try the 0.999 version, available here:

    http://plugins.svn.wordpress.org/simple-facebook-connect/branches/new-sfc/

Make sure to remove the old files completely before installing the new version.

Alright...will remove the old files and dump these in the folders they need to be in and will see how that goes. Thanks.

I removed them all...created a new folder called simple-facebook-connect and copied the files in there from the link you sent me. Now...I activated the plugin. It only has Simple Facebook Connect 0.999 and so I go to Settings page. I have the app id and secret in there....I have checked Login with Facebook, User Registration, Sidebar Widgets. Now...when I logout the WP Dashboard and just go to the site...there is no Facebook Connect Button. Also...there is no facebook connect php file either in the link you sent me. Not sure if thats the issue or not.

    Thanks.

You never mentioned that you were doing this on the front end of the site. SFC-Login, in all its incarnations, has only ever supported the wp-login screen itself. And the SFC-Connect widget was removed, mostly because it never did work properly.

Logging into a site must, in some way, go through the wp-login.php file. This is for security reasons, it's not safe to log a person into WordPress in any other way.

Question for you...and don't think I am questing your expertise or abilities....but the other sites I have are setup exactly the same way...and SFC works seemlessly on them. Now...regarding the security of WP...how is it an unsafe practice if all its doing is passing a username and password to the database? I have only been using WP since Jan 1st of this year and still learning. Currently working in Flex and Air doing some desktop and mobile apps with php. Any help and/or knowledge is greatly appreciated regarding the plugin. I am trying to become more proficient.

The other question is...if you took off the Facebook Connect widget...do you plan on putting it back? You have released STC with the connect widget. Although, I haven't be able to get one to even show up on the sites I have it installed on.

how is it an unsafe practice if all its doing is passing a username and password to the database?

First, it's passing that data in plaintext over an unsecured link (not https). This may be the case for your backend and login as well, but at least it's possible to set up WordPress to require HTTPS on the login and admin screens.

Second, if you don't pass through the wp-login.php file, then the backend admin cookies can't be set properly, and so you won't really be logged in. The front end of the site uses different cookies than the back end of the site does.

I'll see about making a front-end login button that will work, but it will have to pass through wp-login to do its job.

I have a question about the Plugin: Simple Facebook Connect. Now that I have activated the plugin I see the text for the button in both my sidebar and comment section but there is no button. There is only text. What do I need to do to have the button appear?

Otto...thanks for the explanation. I am sure I will learn more about it as time goes by. I did have a question for you...did you disable the button feature in STC? I am trying to use it instead for right now but it doesn't have the STC connect widget either. I know its for another support forum, but just wanted a yes or no answer. lol.

To arjay2g....Otto has eliminated the FBC button right now because it is not working correctly. Please read the post above your posting for more detailed information. Thanks bud.

    Hey there

New version seems to be working fine. (facebook activity works perfect - better then before). Any ideas when we will have the facebook connect option again? It was working perfect until yesterday noon I think! After that, I ve been trying to find what was wrong!!! It was still able to connect but even after succesfull connection, it was still showing "connect with facebook" although the user was already connected.

    Thanks, great job Otto :)

jmonroe, thanks for the quick response! I thought I was just doing something wrong and had been going through the code for sometime now. I can't wait for this feature to return. I think it will help with generating more traffic and overall professional look. Thanks again!
