   Is there supposed to be an option for just having the like button and the count without displaying avatars and names?

   No. But you can edit the plugin and reduce the height if you don't want to see those.

   Speaking of buttons and css... is there a way to change the comments button from Medium to Large? Playing around with CSS will do it but then of course the css is hosted by fb. Any advice?

   I don't think they support multiple sizes of the fb:login-button anymore. They don't mention it on the documentation page.
