[resolved] Creating a FB app is anything but "easy" (4 posts)

"Haven't created an application yet? Don't worry, it's easy!"

Would totally disagree with this statement. It's an utterly incomprehensible pain in the ass.

You say: "After creating the application, put [our URL] in as the Site URL in the Website section."

Where is the "website section"? In 'Facebook for Websites' I tried putting in our URL in the APP Domains box (the only thing remotely close to a "website section" and all I get is error messages.

So then I took a wild guess and thought you actually meant the "Website with Facebook Login" and that SEEMS to work, but won't know for a while.

Hope you can update your instructions if the issue here is that FB has changed the names for everything because it's extremely difficult for those of us who don't know the FB API inside and out to have any idea what we're supposed to do.

    Thanks

In the "Website with Facebook Login" section, it says "Site URL". That seems reasonably close to "as the Site URL in the Website section" to me. Especially since the word "Website" isn't anywhere else on that page.

I agree that the FB App creation process needs work, but I'm not Facebook and can't control that. Creating an app is just one of those things you have to do. Nothing I can do about it.

Hopefully they're reworking the process to make it simpler.

Hi Otto, thanks for your response. :)

Wasn't suggesting for a minute that you were responsible for the way FB is designed, just the instructions you write. I strongly suggest you sit with someone who has never used your plugin and watch them go through the process of setting it up by following the instructions. When they ask questions, you'll known that's what's missing.

To be specific "website with FB login" was not intuitive. It doesn't say that in your instructions, so we have to guess and since we don't need any FB login with our site, it's not intuitive. Technical instructions (IMHO) have to be exact, otherwise they force people to guess, whilst feeling lost in the process.

Since I wrote the SFC plugin, FB has changed the look and design and layout of that developer application page no less than 7 times. Seriously. O_O

I'm just not going to rewrite the docs every time to deal with FB's craziness. So I tried to make it as generic as I could, and you're just going to have to read between the lines and also deal with FB's insanity, like everybody else does. ;)
