   I want to use the autopublish feature- but only for certain posts. Perhaps category based, or tag based. Much like I have a featured slider on my wordpress front page, and can just set a category to featured to have it show up there.

   Is there a way to do this already?

   No, you'd need to write custom code to determine when you wanted it to publish or not.
