Here's a very basic question for someone without PHP expertise, but who wishes to use your query.

I have installed the plugin in 3.01 multisite and checked "Make shortcodes global".

I see a default shortcode called query_posts, and have checked "Enabled" and "Output echoed".

I am expecting that this example accepts the arguments shown here:

    http://codex.wordpress.org/Function_Reference/query_posts

I added the following shortcode into a page:

    [query_posts cat="120"]

After publishing I see nothing, not even the shortcode. Is that because I've missed something very obvious or because there is something wrong in my particular instance? Or something else?

    Suggestions welcome.

There is no default shortcode 'query_posts', so someone has defined this shortcode already. You can find the latest version and the usage instructions of this shortcode here on the support page of the plugin.
