pagination numbers in titles and descriptions for additional pages (8 posts)

like everyone else here, i'm always looking to clean up and improve my SEO. one sticky issue i've been having is duplicate titles / descriptions, and i've noticed the culprit is typically because of deeper page numbers in a category or taxonomy.

using the code rchelidk posted in another thread (numbers-not-displayed-in-category-pages) i was able to edit my meta-descriptions.php file to include a page number on my description.

in the title tag rewriter module, i have the default "{title} - Page {num}" however, not all titles are unaffected. if i navigate through older homepages, i DO get the page number, but NOT if i navigate through my taxonomy or category pages.

should i change some other setting...?

    Hi drkknght,

It's supposed to work on category/tag/taxonomy pages too.

I just now tested it on my site and it works fine, so perhaps there's a conflict with another setting on your setup. Try disabling your other plugins and the other SEO Ultimate modules and see if it works. If it works, try re-enabling the other modules/plugins one-by-one until you've identified which one is causing the problem. Let me know how it goes.

I did some more research into this and I think I know what's happening. When you use the category/tag/taxonomy tabs on the Title Tag Rewriter admin page to specify a custom title tag for a category/tag/taxonomy, SEO Ultimate will use that custom title tag and will bypass the standard title tag generation function. This function generates title tags using the formats on the Default Formats tab. Because SEO Ultimate is bypassing that function, the pagination format isn't being applied to the custom title tags. The reason it was working on my site was because I was auto-generating my title tags using the formats.

I'll release a bugfix for this shortly. In the meantime, the workaround would be to remove the custom title tag for the category/tag/taxonomy so that SEO Ultimate will auto-generate the title using the formats.

Hi John - just tested, and success! :) All subsequent page titles include the page number now. Thanks so much for the help!!

Can I be greedy and ask for a similar, default fix to the description...?

[if not, the code rchelidk posted in the numbers-not-displayed-in-category-pages topic works just as nicely :) ]

    Hi drkknght,
SEO Ultimate 7.0 adds a pagination format field for meta descriptions; hopefully that's what you were looking for...
