Excerpt highlighting (4 posts)

If I understand correctly how Relevanssi highlights excerpts, I can only get excerpt highlights if I check both Custom Excerpts and Show Breakdown.

I realize, for an excerpt generated by WP or a custom excerpt, that the excerpt might or might not contain the search key word. However, even if the key word is present in such an excerpt, Relevanssi does not highlight it.

I suggest: Have Relevanssi highlight the key word in an excerpt generated by WP or custom if the term is in that excerpt. (And if the key word is not in the excerpt, then nothing is highlighted.)

    Thanks. --Bill

No, you don't need to check Show Breakdown, Custom Excerpts is enough. If Relevanssi creates the excerpt, the search key word will be present, unless the only hit is somewhere that doesn't go to the excerpt. These would be things like a) category title b) author name c) tag or other taxonomy term and so on.

I suppose highlighting terms in WordPress-generated excerpts is possible, but in many cases the terms won't appear there and when you use Relevanssi-created excerpts, you do get the term in the excerpt in most cases.

Msaari- Thanks for the response. I see the value in the Relevanssi excerpt, having the search term included. On the other hand, either WP generated or custom excerpts have the advantage of a clearly understood block of text. (ie, sometimes a "snippet" of a post, even while including the search term, might not make much sense to the reader).

Right now, I am generally using the WP generated excerpt, and write custom excerpts for particularly important posts.

*If* highlighting in the WP generated excerpt is a relatively painless thing for you to do, it would be much appreciated. (But only if it is a quick thing to do!) --Bill

I'll have to see, it's probably possible.
