I just found your plugin, so much nicer than default WP.
A question: How would I create a second search function, whereby one search box used one set of parameters (e.g. only from category X, or pages 1,2,3, etc...) and the second search was based on a different set of parameters?

Just add another search box. You can define some parameters (like category) in input fields (for category, use "cats").
Most of the options on the settings page are universal and cannot be adjusted from the search box. Anything that works from the URL can be changed.
