Relevanssi - A Better Search
[resolved] relevansi not indexing catablog descriptions anymore (16 posts)

    hi there,
it seems that relevanssi (v2.7.4) is not indexing the elements descriptions of catablog (v1.2) anymore, here's the example:

http://www.squarepusher.it/?s=album <- the first result showed is a page that shows catablog elements.
http://www.squarepusher.it/?s=coopers <- this text is contained in the same page above but won't produce any result when searched

this wasn't happening in some previous version, but i can't tell precisely when it stopped working or if it depends from a catablog or relevanssi update...

    thanks in advance

    Hi funkoolow,

I have not upgraded relevanssi to version 2.7.4 yet, so I personally have not had a chance to test compatibility. One thing I would check is that the 'Expand ShortCode' features stayed enabled after the upgrade. Also you may want to 'Build the Index' for your site in relevanssi again. As far as I know this is not a new bug in version 1.2, as search works on the official blog which uses CataBlog 1.2 and relevanssi 2.7.3. Good luck and let me know what you find out.

hi and thanks for the reply,
just checked that 'Expand ShortCode' feature and it was already enabled, just to be sure i also reindexed everything but things stood the same way. I'll try to rollback to relevanssi 2.7.3 and see what happens.

thanks for your support for now!

I can confirm that it may be a bug in relevanssi 2.7.4: i've rolled back to 2.7.3 and it now works again.

    thanks for your suggestion :)

ps: is this post enough or will be better to post somewhere else this issue (if this can be considered so)?

There's been small change in how shortcodes are indexed, however I don't see how it should change this (stuff like <style>, <embed>, <object>, <script> and so on is now removed after shortcode expansion, not before. I don't think that should make any difference.

Funkoolow, please drop me an email to mikko@relevanssi.com, I've got a version of 2.7.4 with the indexing code from 2.7.3 - I'd like to see if that works. I still don't have a clue what Catablog is or does, so I may be off here.

    Hi msaari,

CataBlog is a cataloging tool that allows people to basically make stores, galleries and well catalogs.

The ShortCode implementation of CataBlog is pretty straight forward, a string of HTML is returned in the add_shortcode() hooked function. It does not generate any <style>, <embed>, <object> or <script> tags. A user could type those tags into a catalog item's description I suppose. I would assume the returned string is being indexed by your plugin, so I don't see what the problem could be.

I have yet to test this myself, but plan to look into this as I really enjoy your search plugin and want it to work well with CataBlog. Let me know if you find anything out yourself.

Funkoolow tested this and it looks like doing the shortcode expansion the way 2.7.3 did it works with Catablog, while doing the 2.7.4 way doesn't. Next version will flip back to the old way.

so i'll wait for the 2.7.5 to upgrade, after your "patch" wp says i'm running the 2.7.3 instead of 2.7.4 :)

Actually, Relevanssi wasn't indexing any shortcode content. This bug will be fixed in 2.7.5.

So am I to understand Relevanssi does index Shortcode content? I have Catablog 1.4.3 & Relevanssi 2.9.14 installed (both as of today - 3/4/12) and can't find category items within the search.

I have already ran the "build the index".

But even though I specifically have an item named "5431", a search for "5431" yields no results?

ChadAustin, what exactly do you mean by category information? do you mean catalog information? Are you using the Public feature in CataBlog? If so, you should tell relevanssi to index custom post types too.

msaari, any ideas about why the CataBlog Shortcode isn't being expanded and indexed? CataBlog uses the standard WordPress add_shortcode() function for implementation.

Thanks for the quick reply macguru, I appreciate it.

I had not used the Public Feature! Thanks for recommending it. I have been working for almost 6 hours straight - on my day off- and I guess i was trying to shortcut my time by not reading up on all the options.

    Oops. :)

Anyway, once I enabled the Public Feature, the searches behaved as one would expect. I love the WP community!

    Thanks again!
    Chad

The Catablog short code is not registered on admin side, where Relevanssi indexing happens.

Perhaps if you register the shortcodes on admin side as well, it'll work:

    add_shortcode('catablog', array(&$this, 'frontend_content'));
    add_shortcode('catablog_categories', array(&$this, 'frontend_render_categories'));

Of course, that makes so much sense. Thanks, I'll release a patch for CataBlog that fixes this issue soon. Cheers :)

FYI, CataBlog 1.4.4 now registers both shortcodes on the admin side as well, allowing Relevanssi to expand and index CataBlog shortcodes. Yay! :)
