Should I modify this plugin to add the option of making the widget title link to the category specified's archive? If yes, I will lose my changes if I upgrade it in future.
This plugin is great and makes my life alot easier but hasn't been updated in quite a while.
What to do?

Not really the ideal solution, but you can use a shortcode in the Byline field to generate the category name linking to the archive. You can then use CSS to position the link or indent the text and use a nice picture as background-image.
I think this shortcode should work:
[entry-terms taxonomy="category"]
