    Two of the thumbnails wouldn't allow me to marquee them in order to crop. The two images are show in this screen capture: http://screencast.com/t/k2bZwrGukkkU

    try selecting all the thumbnails (Just use the "All" tag there at the top) and see if that fixes it. You can paste the last couple of lines from the debug log if not. (The line SETTING ASPECTRATIO: 1:0 I believe is the culprit. The aspect ratio should only be set if there is a thumbnail selected, and it gets re-evaluated when multiple thumbnails are selected.

    as a matter of fact, ONLY when I select the two thumbs with "image_width x 0" does the problem occur. Here is a snippet of what happens when any other thumb with one of the "image_width x 0" thumbs are selected:

    Can you try the latest version and tell me if it fixes the problem. (If you still have an issue, you know the drill -- log files, describe if the problem is slightly different, etc.)

    Thanks.

    Your medium and large post thumbnails are defined incorrectly. The problem here is that you have the sizes set to (for example on medium) 500x0 with crop enabled. When crop is enabled, you are telling wordpress that you WANT the picture to have a limit of 0 height, which will make a very uninteresting picture (and I throw an error when this happens).

    I don't know where this crop setting is handled, because by default I don't think that the medium and large thumbnails HAVE an option (through the admin) to change that setting. It's probably being tweaked by a plugin or theme.

    Without knowing which plugin/theme made this change, it might be hard to determine the best way to change the setting, but on my test system:

    1. I created a simple plugin and enabled it
    2. Used PTEs' debug log to verify the medium crop setting had been changed (Under the SIZES array: should have crop =>)
    3. Disabled the plugin
    4. Double-checked that the change persisted.

    You can try the plugin if you want (but I offer no guarantees that another plugin/theme won't change the setting back immediately):

    <?php
    /*
    Plugin Name: UncropMediumLarge
    Plugin URI: http://wordpress/
    Description: This is not just a plugin.
    */

    # This only needs to be run once and it modifies the settings in the database.
    update_option('medium_crop',null);
    update_option('large_crop',null);

    ?>

    I should have looked at the obvious. I left the height measurement out (defaulted to zero) since I wanted WordPress to set the height to whatever it might be at the width I specified. Thanks for your time and explanation of how WordPress handles cropping.

    if anyone might benefit from the same misunderstanding of WordPress thumbnail settings here is my current (hopefully correct) setting. http://screencast.com/t/DeMCjM4ka3h

    My objective is to make sure the width of Medium and Large do not exceed the width I specified for each. The height/s of 9999 is to have excessively large dimension that is unlikely to be ever used.
