Podpress statistics questions (2 posts)

    Hello again,

I have activated the PodPress statistics and I have a few questions about the feature.

We had set up an additional FeedBurner feed to help make it easier to subscribe using different podcatchers like Google Reader, etc. Will the statistics reflect downloads or plays made using the FeedBurner feed? I've attempted to download and play through Google Reader and from the FeedBurner page itself, and those techniques do not seem to generate stats.

The FeedBurner feed was made with this RSS feed, created with PodPress which we used for Itunes:
    http://lulasapub.com/feed/lulas_a_pubcast

I've been able to get stats from iTunes downloads, but not FeedBurner plays or downloads. The FeedBurner feed is:
    http://feeds.feedburner.com/LulasAPubcast

Also, should the stats also reflect if someone plays on the iTunes preview webpage (not downloaded to iTunes itself)? I experimented with that and did not seem to get a hit for it.

And a more general question related to all of these: Does the PodPress stats ignore hits from my computer, much like the general WordPress stats ignore my hits because I'm an administrator? I tried some of these on other computers in the house.

Thanks again in advance for any time you can dedicate to these questions. You have been very helpful so far.

    Hello,

Will the statistics reflect downloads or plays made using the FeedBurner feed?

I would say that they should do that. Usually downloads from the But thanks to you posting both feed URLs I have noticed that the URLs of the media files in the FeedBurner feed do not have the URL scheme which is necessary for the counting mechanism.
If you activate the statistics feature of podPress, the plugin masks all podPress media file URLs with a special scheme. It counts only if someone requests a media file via an URL which has this scheme.

    Original URL scheme:
    http://www.example.com/wp-content/uploads/2011/02/test.m4a

    podPress stats URL scheme:
    http://www.example.com/podpress_trac/feed/123/0/test.m4a

One explanation is that you have registered your feed at FeedBurner before you have activated the statistics feature. FeedBurner stores the feed usually in some kind of cache memory and refreshes this cache probably only if the feed contains a new episode. My guess is that the FeedBurner feed includes still the URLs with the original URL scheme.

For all that I know FeedBurner has a function or an option which can speed up the automatic update of the cached feed or trigger the update manually.

I've been able to get stats from iTunes downloads, but not FeedBurner plays or downloads.

I guess that you have probably registered the original feed from your blog (and not the FeedBurner version of it) at the iTunes Store.

Also, should the stats also reflect if someone plays on the iTunes preview webpage (not downloaded to iTunes itself)?

Yes, the downloads should appear as downloads from the feed. The URLs at this iTunes page have the podPress stats URL scheme for downloads from feeds. I have controled that. iTunes has no other possibility than to use these URLs (the URL of the media files which are in the feed) and if it is using these URLs then a download via this page should appear in the statistics.
    Please, check that again.

Does the PodPress stats ignore hits from my computer[...]?

No. It counts every download or play regardless of the login status.
