iTunes not updating (27 posts)

    Hi,

    A couple of months ago I migrated one wordpress blog into my main page. I set up podpress with category casting, and made the RSS for the feed is the same as it was for the old blog :
    http://pwradio.net/fm/?feed=podcast

    So, an iTunes subscriber gets updates, but the iTunes page has not updated since.

    Here's the blog:
    http://pwradio.net/fm (which is a category of http://pwradio.net)
    Here's the iTunes page:
    http://itunes.apple.com/us/podcast/paddy-whacked-radio-fm-broadcast/id300168326

    Any thoughts to whether this is an iTunes problem or a Podpress problem? I sent a couple of "report a problem" messages to iTunes, but have not heard back.

    Could this somehow tie into this other problem I am having?

    Thanks for any help you can offer,

    Shawn

    Shawn,

    one problem might be the RSS image which has currently not the right size.

    But there is another issue: the iTunes:keywords should be single words separated by commas. "Paddy-Whacked Radio FM Broadcast!" is the title of your show but the keywords should be like tags which are describing the content, maybe like "music, Irish, indie, green, radio".

    Correct these two things and wait a day or two.

    Regards,
    Tim

    Hi again,

    I have no key words set on the "FM" category OR on the main "global" setting. I just have a very detailed description. I may have on the old blog (which WAS pwradio.net/fm, but has since been deleted, files and all).

    Thanks again,

    Shawn

    Shawn,

    you are right with the iTunes:keywords for the channel. But there is at least one post with post specific iTunes settings. You can find these settings below the editor box (where you add the episodes).

    Try http://validator.w3.org/feed with your feed:

    line 1, column 17465: Use commas to separate keywords (10 occurrences) [help]

        ... ywords>Paddy-Whacked Radio FM Broadcast!</itunes:keywords> <itunes:autho ...

    It is a little bit difficult to say but I believe one post with those keywords is your last podcast "78. St. Patrick's Week Special ...".

    Is http://pwradio.net/fm/?feed=podcast the URL you are using in the iTunes Store?

    You have obviously changed the settings like the feed image settings. But http://pwradio.net/fm/?feed=podcast is maybe not your the URL of the current category feed.

    http://pwradio.net/category/fm/feed/ seems to be the URL of your category feed.

    This is maybe a little bit off topic but it seems that the site title of you blog is not defined. If I open the main RSS feed (http://pwradio.net/feed/) of your blog then the title value is empty (line 1, column 1113: title should not be blank [help]).
    This value is used in other feeds too.
    If you have left the related field at the general settings page of your blog (not of podPress) empty in order to hide the text header on the blog front pages then you could consider a different solution. Fill out this field and add the following lines to the style.css of your theme:

    h1#site-title {
    display:none;
    }

    to hide the tagline add:

    div#site-description {
    display:none;
    }

    Tim

    HA! Yes, we were looking at the same thing just now. I have a redirect from when I switched over, and though it made perfect sense at the time, I can't remember exactly why I did it.

    Ok, so here's what I JUST did... you'll see though, I still have a problem that I'll get to.

    Thinking that there people may have /?feed=podcast in their readers, I have redirected as follows:
    http://pwradio.net/fm/?feed=podcast
    Redirects to

    http://pwradio.net/category/fm/feed

    BUT... Now new episodes won't load on iTunes. I may need to put it back the way it was, since this IS the St. Patrick's Day show. :)

    Thoughts? And THANKS!

    I take it back, episodes are downloading now. I'll wait and see what happens with iTunes and google. Please let me know how things look from your end. If its still not working, I'll be back in touch.

    Thanks for all your help!

    Shawn,
    http://pwradio.net/fm/?feed=podcast
    and
    http://pwradio.net/category/fm/feed
    are not identical.

    For instance the iTunes:image is not the same.

    ... and in both feeds the post specific iTunes:keywords are still in a format which is not recommended.

    In conclusion: I would say that the posts in both feeds are the same but the feed settings are different. That is why I think that your redirect does not work as expected.

    @anderson111: If you have question then please ask these questions. If these questions are not related to the special problem in this thread then I would suggest, that you open a new thread. Please, add the tag "podpress" to this new thread.

    Please, read the Other Notes and FAQ section first.

    TiM!!! Thanks so much. Everything seems to be mostly working fine now. For some reason the redirects took a while to kick in, but they are working, and iTunes has picked up on http://pwradio.net/category/fm/feed/.

    One weird thing is that I am not sure podpress is processing the feed 100% correctly. One issue is the key word problem you were mentioning (I don't have key words set), and another is that the title of the podcast repeats. You can see this in the feed and on iTunes here:
    http://itunes.apple.com/us/podcast/paddy-whacked-radio-fm-broadcast/id300168326

    Any thoughts on that?

    Your help has been and is greatly appreciated!!

    Oh, I guess one other thing is that the 144X144 image is still not showing up on Google Listen, so I figure it is not being positioned correctly in the RSS...???

    another is that the title of the podcast repeats

    Usually the title of a category feed has this scheme: blog title >> category name.
    I guess that the category name is the same as the blog title. However you can set a custom title for the category feed in the Category Casting options. There is an option in the section General Feed Settings which is called "Blog/Podcast title". You have three choices: the global setting - blog title >> category name / append category name - appends the name of the category to whatever the global setting is / category name - the feed title will be the category name only

    Paddy-Whacked Radio FM Broadcast! seems to be the name of your blog and this category. The default setting for the post specific iTunes settings is "Use WordPress Categories". That means that podPress adds automatically the nice names of the categories of a post as the keywords.
    That is maybe not the best default setting because a category name (like in your case) may consist of more than one word.
    I will probably change the default setting in the upcoming podPress version.
    I'm sorry for my wrong assumption.

    Furthermore I have noticed that you are using the CSS code to hide the blog title and tagline on the blog front pages and I have discovered that the code to hide the title should better be:

    div#site-title {
    display:none;
    }

    h1#site-title is wrong. I had my eyes on a different theme before I have had written the code snippet.

    Oh, I guess one other thing is that the 144X144 image is still not showing up on Google Listen, so I figure it is not being positioned correctly in the RSS...???

    The part of the feed is correct. I do not know why Google Listen does not show the RSS image.
    Maybe the software loads the image only in the moment when you subscribe to the feed. Or maybe the channel settings like the image are in some kind of cache memory of this software.

    Tim

    The blog title is, and has been blank in my settings, and I have been using the custom category title setting

    The part of the feed is correct. I do not know why Google Listen does not show the RSS image.

    I have reset the cache on booth google listen AND iTunes and this image does not show up at all. On iTunes I assume it should be the small associated artwork image??

    I just made the CSS code change you recommended. Thanks.

    Thanks,

    Oh, also I reinstalled podpress yesterday just to be sure there wasn't a corrupt file.

    I have been using the custom category title setting

    I have test a little bit myself and I have to say that this is a bug. The option "category name" as title for a category feed does not work right and shows the name of the category doubled like in your case.

    Thanks for reporting this issue!

    The current Development Version contains a bug fix for that problem. It contains also a fix for the problem with the keywords.

    Notice: This Development Version will modify some podPress meta data in the db which makes it difficult to downgrade. I would appreciate it if you could test this version. But please make a backup of the db of your blog.

    The blog title is, and has been blank in my settings,

    Btw: Why did you do that? Now that you hide the text title on all your blog pages, you could fill it in. That would be a good thing because the default feeds of your blog like http://pwradio.net/feed/ would have a title again.

    Hi,

    Thanks, I will do this asap, but it may be a couple of days (3 small kids and I am studying for an exam). I'll backup the DB, but if I have problems I'll need your help in getting it back up.

    I tried putting in a blog title, but it still showed up in my header.

    Thanks,

    Shawn

    Hi Tim,

    The dev version did not attach the individual blogs. It looked like all RSS data stopped at the end of the iTunes data. At least that info looked a bit more tidy. :)

    I backed up the DB and needed to restore it (I'm learning) to make everything hunky-dory.

    Another bug(?) I noticed is on the main default feed setting page (/admin.php?page=podpress/podpress_feed.php) the images are not linked properly.

    iTunes:Image
    My link : http://pwradio.net/wp-content/uploads/2011/01/white_backgrnd_3001.png
    Image URL for the image just below called "podcast image - big" : http://pwradio.net/wp-admin/admin.php?page=podpress/podpress_feed.php

    Blog/RSS Image (144 x 144 pixels)
    My link: http://pwradio.net/wp-content/uploads/forRSS/white_backgrnd_300-e1294810162229.jpg
    Image URL for the image just below called "podcast image - small"
    http://pwradio.net/wp-admin/admin.php?page=podpress/podpress_feed.php (same as above)

    Thanks,

    Shawn

    I tried putting in a blog title, but it still showed up in my header.

    Shawn, I was a little bit confused. Because your theme uses at the home page and e.g. the category pages different HTML elements to display the blog title.
    Please, use all three CSS snippets. h1#site-title is for the Home page.

    In regard to the other problem I have questions:
    When did you noticed the problem with the appearance of the preview of the images at the Feed/iTunes Settings page? Before the upgrade attempt? Afterwards? Or after the roll-back?

    Is it right that the input field was filled with the URL of your RSS image?
    If you see "podcast image - small" or "podcast image - big" instead of the images then it is probably a Javascript error at this page. The preview is dynamic. The images get loaded by a Javascript.
    I could not reproduce this problem. That is why I would like to ask you to repeat whatever you done before you have opened this page. Please, open this time the Javascript error console of your webbrowser before you do that. Maybe clear it first.
    Does it display errors?

    Maybe it is helpful if you could describe how you have upgraded the plugin.

    Why was it necessary to downgrade the plugin again? Have you noticed other problems?

    Hi Shawn,

    I have another question:
    Do you use the "Absolute path of the media files directory" option (general settings page of podPress)? Does it change during or after the upgrade?

    Thank you for the reports!

    Tim

    The dev version did not attach the individual blogs. It looked like all RSS data stopped at the end of the iTunes data.

    I'm really not sure why this happened. I have tested the 8.8.10 RC 13 successfully without this and also without the problem with the feed image previews at the Feed/iTunes Settings page.

    Do I understand it right that the <itunes:image src="..." /> tag was the last element in the source code of your RSS feeds and that there were no <item>s?

    Was there no error message in the source code of the feed?

    Interesting. I posted a reply here twice and they were deleted. Did I say something wrong?

    I have seen that strong words get masked and to much lines of code in a post are also not good. But I don't think that someone or an automatic filter removes complete posts in this forum. On the other hand I have noticed that some posts appeared with a big delay. But these posts have been visible to the logged in author.

    I really like to fix all the problems. But I have trouble to reproduce the issue which you have reported. That is why I hope that you will find the time to write these post again.
    But your exam is more important. I will wait.

    Hi Tim,

    The exam is an ongoing thing until I am done studying (licensing exam). I had posted a copy of the (very short) RSS produced by the dev software and asked if it would be easier for you to poke around the account. I sent a link to the contact section of my web site ( /contact ) if that made more sense.

    Since I don't know which of those got my post deleted twice, I will wait for your response.

    Hi Shawn,

    I'm going to contact you via the contact form of your blog.

    In general if you want to post code then you could use one of the pastebin services. You don't need to register there and you can set an expiration date for your posts there.

    Regards,
    Tim
