• I haven’t checked my PodPress statistics in a while, and I see that one of my podcasts has nearly 8,000 files shown downloadeD. What does this mean? That 8,000 people have downloaded this episode of my podcast? Or is there some sort of bot that is downloading them for a non-human? The same podcast has 370 listed under feed.

    Thanks for the info!

    Hi Brian,

In general the numbers in the podPress statistics are clicks. For instance 8000 means that the URL of this particular media file was clicked 8000 times. 370 of the 8000 clicks are clicks on the attachment of the post in a RSS or ATOM feeds of your blog. Such clicks may come from people who have subscribed to one of your feed – maybe via the iTunes Store or maybe directly with a feed reader or podcatcher.
(Web means clicks on download links in the post at the web site. Play means clicks on the player or play button.)

But those clicks may come from humans or bots and it is also not save to says that the file was completely downloaded or played 8000 times. For instance someone or something may have clicked on the link to the file but has ended/aborted the loading process. That could be one click.

I have started to implement a bot filter which you may use to filter downloads from bots out of the displayed results. If you use the Stat Method Full you can select IP address or User Agent names as one of a bot manually. For instance a User Agent name may look like: Mozilla/5.0 (Windows NT 6.1; WOW64; rv:6.0.1) Gecko/20100101 Firefox/6.0.1 that look like one of a listener Windows 7 64bit and a Mozilla Firefox 6.0.1. One of a bot looks like Mozilla/5.0 (compatible; Googlebot/2.1; +http://www.google.com/bot.html). Most bots don’t hide that they are one.
But if your podcast is very popular the stat method Full lead to a lot of db entries. Counts Only might be more appropriate.

    Regards,
    Tim
