Paid Memberships Pro
If a paid subscriber wants to add a free membership . . . (5 posts)

Here is a question based upon a subscriber adding or switching membership levels. If a user subscribes to a paid membership level and wants to downgrade to a free membership, does this cause any issues?

Scenario I: Changing membership levels - the subscriber cancels the paid subscription and opts for the free one.

Scenario II: An existing subscriber wants to join a fee subscription which has less benefits then the paid. What happens when a subscriber joins both paid and free?

Out of the box, PMPro will immediately change the membership level and cancel any old payments scheduled with the gateway.

So when they downgrade to free, they would become a free member right away. No more access to the paid stuff. No refund.

If you want different behavior, that can be coded in using various hooks/etc. I can help at the support site: http://www.paidmembershipspro.com

How does PMP know that free is a downgrade? If PMP sees it has a cost and the other has no cost, that is how it determines if it is a downgrade? But that may not always be the case.

    Example:

The free subscription, subscription "A" may be a benefit of having a Gold subscription, so "A" is a promotional subscription. So they would belong to both subscriptions. So the question is, can a user hold dual subscriptions for the same program?

Now you would say, just package all of the benefits from free and paid into the paid subscription. The free subscription is marketed to only those who have purchased the paid subscription.

I just used the word downgrade. PMPro does not have that concept. It just changes from one membership level to another.

Right now users can only have one membership level at a time.

I don't understand your example or what you are trying to do. But I think you have the gist. Instead of having a la cart memberships (users can have A or B or A + B -- which is not allowed with PMPro), have the membership levels include each other... so (A, B -- which includes access to everything A has, and C -- which includes access to everything A and B and C has) etc.
