[resolved] Backup failed...timing out (13 posts)

My backups are failing with the same basic error in the activity log. Both manual and scheduled (this morning) I read the post about how heavy the load is on Sunday mornings so I will change my schedule to try to alleviate that issue but could someone take a look at my log to see if I need to change settings?

    Hi thehopmbc,

Can you download the following file:
    https://wordpress.backup-technology.com/wponlinebackup-tracing-389.zip

You will then need to delete the existing plugin and install this one. Once you reproduce the error, you'll see a trace.log file in the wp-content/plugins/wponlinebackup/ folder.

If you email this file to support "at" backup-technology "dot" co "dot" uk and let me know here when you've sent it, we can analyse it and try to find out what is going on.

    Thanks,

    Jason

    Hi thehopmbc,

Can you compress the file and try sending it again? We've not yet received it so it may have been too big for the email. Compressing should make it tiny with it being text. In Windows you just right-click -> Send to Compressed ZIP File. In Mac OS X you just right-click -> Compress.

    Thanks,

    Jason

    Thanks thehopmbc,

We got the file. We've found the error is happening when it's building the final ZIP file towards end of backup.

Can you try this newer version for me? It will give more information too if the problem happens again:

    Thanks,

    Jason

Same issue as before. Quick question...do I need to upgrade to WP 3.4.2?

No as long as you are using at least 2.8.6 (which is quite old) it should work fine.

Can you grab the trace.log again and compress it and send us it? Make sure to compress it to ZIP file if you can. The last one you sent we received uncompressed and it was quite big. It'll be better if it is compressed in ZIP. In Windows you just right-click -> Send to Compressed ZIP File. In Mac OS X you just right-click -> Compress.

This new log will contain extra information that will help us.

    Thanks.

    Hi thehopmbc,

We're seeing some strange things happening when backing up your uploads folder - maybe it is struggling with the sheer size and amount of data in there.

Can you try excluding the uploads by ticking the exclusion for uploads in General Settings, and then try a backup? No need to send us the log, just let us know if it works. Also login to FTP and delete the trace.log file afterwards - it can grow big over time otherwise.

Meanwhile we're adding yet more log entries to try get to bottom of the problem as we're still unsure exactly what's happening and where things are failing. So we'll give you another plugin download link tomorrow or day after.

Sorry this isn't turning out a quick fix!

    Thanks,

    Jason

    Hi thehopmbc,

    Did excluding work?

We have another trace version available you can get a log from if not and you still want to look at the issue.

    Thanks,

Excluding seemed to work with only one error...
File /home/content/h/o/p/hopmbc/html/missing.html was skipped: An error happened at: stream_full.php(450)
file_get_contents(/home/content/h/o/p/hopmbc/html/missing.html) [function.file-get-contents]: failed to open stream: Permission denied

Should I still install this new trace version?

It's entirely up to you. It will help us fix the reasons why you need to exclude that folder. So it will be beneficial if you could try it.

That error is a normal one - means the plugin couldn't read that file so it skipped it, you just need to check permissions to it.

    Thanks,

    Jason
