   Any ideas on what would be required to load videos as thumbnails and load flash after click?

   I haven't looked under the hood yet, but that's the direction I am going. I'll also make the videos open in a modal window.

   You'd probably have to change the thing that gets returned from the oEmbed endpoint. Since that's only in the media provider's control, it's not really possible. The only real alternative would be to "recreate" oEmbed by wrapping something around it to get the thumbnail, then load the media (the thing that oEmbed returns by default) on demand.
