    WordPress Version 3.4.2
    NextGEN Gallery Version 1.9.6
    2745 Images
    101 Galleries

NnextGEN just stopped making thumbnails. It creates the thumb directory in the folder where the images are but it does nothing else. Permissions on that folder are 777.
All was fine last time I uploaded a dozen images a few weeks ago.
I have not installed any new plugins yet. I did update to the latest wordpress since I last uploaded images.
I cannot go in and manually make thumbnails with nextgen either. I cannot manually make them for new images as well as existing images.
The error I get when trying to generate thumbnails when importing a folder is: "ID # "A failure occured"
The error I get when manually trying to create a thumbnail with nextgen is: "Error creating thumbnail"

I HAVE searched and read for solutions. All of those solutions do not apply to me.
I do NOT think this is memory related.
I do NOT think this is safemode related.

I am having a similar problem. I have spent a lot of time searching forums. NextGen has been working fine on this dev site: http://sophiaguild.catswebweave.com/ until recently when I tried to edit the thumbnails and the changes save in the list under "manage gallery" but not in the slideshow.

Then when I bulk edit the thumbnails with "create new thumbnails" I get the error messages:
    A failure occurred
Error : Create Image failed. Check safe mode settings

I tried to change permissions on the server using Coda and it wouldn't let me: Server said: /sophiaguild.catswebweave.com/wp-content/gallery/featured-talismans/thumbs: No such file or directory

    Error -125: remote chdir failed

    Using PHP 5.3
Memory limit is set to 128MB
    WP version 3.4.2
    NextGen version 1.9.6

What is the issue and how to fix? Client wants to go live asap.

    Thanks.

I was getting this error message until I used Chrome to edit the sites. Running WordPress 3.4.2 and new install of NextGEN. Seems to be new issue running under WP 3.4.2 as I didn't encounter it before my upgrade.

My thumbnails cannot be created because the gallery directory ist set to 710 when created. Any way to prevent this??

I was getting a thumbnail creation error when my images contained too much junk metadata and possibly also when some of them were in CMYK.

Just in case, you could try using Photoshop's "Save for Web" feature (this will remove any junk metadata from the image file), and make sure that the box to "convert to sRGB" is checked in the "Save for Web" dialog box. Try saving out one image and adding it to a NextGen gallery.

I am having the same problem.
I have not been able to get 1 image into my Nextgen gallery.
When I try to Upload an image I get a message
(Error: Exceed Memory Limit. Require: 65.17 MByte).
If I check the Gallery directory I see the image is there.
If I check the thumbs directory inside the gallery I see the thumbnail.
I can view both in windows photo Gallery. But in my gallery I do not see any thumbnail. If I try to edit thumbnail I get the revolving circle forever. I have let it go for 10 15 minutes to no result.

Sorry my previous post was not correct.
I do not get the thumbnail image created. The one thumbnail images that was created was from a very small image.

I am having exactly the same issues. Using the most recent version of NexGen Gallery (1.9.6), have opened all permissions temporary to see if I can resolve the problem. No go.

Any further ideas would be helpful. I need thumbnails!!!!

    :)

    check out the following website:
    http://www.visser.com.au/blog/thumbnail-generation-php-memory-limit-nextgen-gallery/

The issue I had was resolved by their suggestion. But here is the hart of it.

Thumbnail Generation PHP Memory Limit NextGEN Gallery
This issue can be resolved by increasing the memory usage allocation at a per-plugin level for PHP applications that require more grunt than others. It’s quick and easy!

Open an FTP connection to your root WordPress directory
Open /wp-content/plugins/nextgen-gallery/lib/gd.thumbnail.inc.php with your favourite text editor (e.g. UltraEdit, etc.)
    On line #168 un-comment (remove the //) from before @ini_set('memory_limit', '128M');
    Save and upload changes
Delete image/s that failed to generate a thumbnail and re-upload using NextGEN Gallery’s standard Upload Images feature

I no longer see "Open /wp-content/plugins/nextgen-gallery/lib/gd.thumbnail.inc.php with your favourite text"

-I am using v2.0 of the plugin

I was using 1&1 but am now using dreamhost
and have the memory error when creating thumbnails

    thank you
