[Plugin: NextGEN Gallery] stylesheet inactive

I’ve seen this question asked, but none of the answers have worked for me. In the plugin editor, when i open the nextgen css (any of the css files that come with the plugin, in fact), it says (inactive) by the page title, which I suppose would be why the changes I made aren’t working.

I set the slideshow to float right, but when it loads, it butts right up against the text. and here’s the funny thing — i can see it start in the right position and then jump over to the left to cling to the text.
