When I click the "show as slideshow" button, it shows my first photo then goes blank for a while, then the first photo reappears before the slideshow actually begins.
Can this behaviour be improved somehow?

Just checked in IE and the slideshow works fine, so must be a firefox problem. I'm running Firefox 8.0.1
