[resolved] [Plugin: NextGEN Gallery] How to prevent downloads of copyrighted images? (3 posts)

We have a site that uses nextgen gallery plugin with wordpress, where we feature photos. We want to start selling the images available to users for a small fee on a different site and want to prevent people from just doing a right click and downloading the image on the blog. The first workaround we use is watermark, but it's a light protection.

Does anyone know of a way to prevent people from downloading images in wordpress, or maybe some pop up text "copyrighted" that we could pop when someone does this?

You can disable right click with javascript but that is light protection too. People can turn off javascript and right click away. Plus, view-source tells you where the image is anyway. Honestly, though, if the image is displayed in the browser window, it has already been downloaded, at least temporarily. That's the way http works. You can't really prevent people from downloading an image if you want them to see the image. You can just make it more or less difficult. You can disable right-click. Show a low-rez watermarked copy and let your paying customers download a high rez copy. Chop up your image into a dozen smaller pieces so it would have to be reassembled by a would be image thief. That sort of thing.

Thanks apljdi. This is good info and probably what we'll do for the time being. Cheers.
