I asked virtually the same question awhile back and got no answer. I am still investigating. If I find any info on this I will pass it on to you.
First of all disable the checkbox : “Deactivate gallery page link” (see gallery options). This has the effect that a album link to a sub page.
Second instead of adding to the subpage [nggaller id=123] you add [slideshow id=123] and so it show up the slideshow.
Is there a way to have the album open directly in the viewer (Thickbox, Lightbox, etc.) and skip the gallery or slideshow page?

How extensive would those code changes be? Any chance you could point me in the dirsection of what needs to be changed?
The issue is I have an album with a series of two photo galleries (jewelry pieces). I’d rather the gallery preview image open the viewer so the visitor did not have to go to the gallery page – choose one of the two thumbnails – view the two photos – and then back to the album page again.
Any thoughts or suggestions?
I’m also looking for this hack/feature to happen, where displayed galleries of an album can be clicked for viewere.

To help: Here’s a link to a thread that shows you how to achive a similar effect by making changes to the code. It uses galleries instead of albums, but a single image as a thumb. You’ll see.
It worked for me, but it seems to have trouble with seperating the nextgen images on the page, in that they’re all listed and shown on the slideshow.

I figured out a pretty simple work around to this problem. In the gallery options page, show only 1 image per page. Further down check the Add hidden images box.
Then go back to the page where you previously placed the album and replace it with each gallery listed individually. This will give you one thumbnail for each gallery that opens up thickbox (or whatever you have selected) and lets you click through all the images in the gallery.
You can get rid of the pagination underneath each gallery, and add the name of the gallery by editing the gallery.php file
@vanwidp, thanks man! Curious if you know how to resize the the one image that is display, the teaser, without duplicating the mage? but then is viewed as the normal size when flipping through light/thick whatever box?
