How to get mixed portrait & landscape thumbnails (3 posts)

I have been messing with ngg for more than a week, trying to put up a gallery where the images include a mixture of portrait and landscape orientation images. My artist/client doesn't want his artwork squished into a square shape, or cropped. It seems to me that ngg should be able to respect and maintain the aspect ratio of the images it displays. But nothing I have tried so far makes that happen. I really need help on this. I have a deadline to meet. If I can't make this work, I will have to build the portfolio site in HTML and not in WordPress.

Here is an example of what happens. At least 4 of these thumbnails should be in portrait orientation and have been force cropped into squares. The enlargements are fine, but not the thumbnails.

On my settings, on the Options>Thumbnails I have the following settings:
    Thumbnail settings

Width x height (in pixel) 200 x 200 These values are maximum values
Set fix dimension Ignore the aspect ratio, no portrait thumbnails(unchecked)
    Thumbnail quality 100 %

Just set a max width not the height. This will allow the aspect ratio to be maintained.

I can't believe this is so easy. I looked every for tips, most of them involving changing the CSS.
