   In Chrome 4.1.249, FF 3.6.3, and IE 8, the expanded single images hides the navigation bar under the page view. Most people will not know to scroll down. and clicking the picture closes the images instead of advancing to the next image. This causes a lot of unnecessary clicking for each image if they don't know to look for the nav bar.

   make the images smaller? On the left nav of the nextgen gallery click options > images and change the resize to something suitable

   The image size is not the issue. Nextgen gallery dynamically resizes the image up or down to fill the window. You can make your browser window smaller and it will still fit cutting out the nav buttons.
