I have WordPress 3.0.1 and NextGEN gallery 1.6.2 on Windows hosting. Both most recent version. Up till now, I was able to upload images to a folder and use WP control panel to create thumbnails and galleries. Few days ago, when I tried to create thumbnails, I got the following error:
Create Image failed. Check safe mode settings
I have read few posts and tried few things (creating thumbs folder manually, disabling all plugins except NextGEN). Nothing works.
Please help. Thanks.

Just checked my PHP settings. Under PHP Core, safe mode is OFF.

I finally found a way around this.
Use a ftp program like filezilla and go to the gallery folder that is causing a problem creating thumbnails. Create a folder there called "thumbs" (without the quotes). Then just create new thumbnails in manage gallery.
This fixed it for me.
