Hi Alex,
I have the latest WP and the latest NGG installed. Usually works great. With one particular site I keep getting an odd error just after uploading images, always the same msg: "Fatal error: Only variables can be passed by reference in /home/mattsoar/374.intermediated.org/wp-content/plugins/nextgen-gallery/lib/meta.php on line 385."
The plugin also acts erratically, only sometimes creates thumbnails, and keeps overriding the filenames and description of some jpgs with the word 'Print'.
Help!
M.
Compare the server settings with the site which causes this problems and a working site. The most important settings are shown on the overview page

Thanks for the quick reply.
I checked as you suggested: the server settings looked slightly different because I had an older version of the plugin (1.5.5) on the other site. I auto-updated it to 1.6.2, which made the server settings identical for both sites. Then I tried to use NextGen on the other site and got the same error msg: "Fatal error: Only variables can be passed by reference in /home/mattsoar/www.mattsoar.org/wp-content/plugins/nextgen-gallery/lib/meta.php on line 385".
Happy to try other fixes. I am not a programmer, but I checked line 385 in the file meta.php and it says on the line before:
//TODO:Review this, reports sometimes a error "Fatal error: Only variables can be passed by reference" (PHP 5.2.6)
Best wishes,
Matt
Very interesting, does this appear with any kind of image ? This failure is a couple of times reported, never had the chance to catch it.

Ok. Somehow (I still don't know how I found this link) - I found a different version of the meta.php file. It was on the Google Code site... but what I had work was cut and pasting this meta.php file into Notepad, saving it and replacing the non-working meta.php file on my site. Remember to save a copy of your old meta.php file in case anything goes wrong!

Yes the bug is fixed in the next version...

I would say deactivate, remove your plugin. Download the newest version of the plugin from the website, install that.
Should fix your problem.
