[Plugin: NextGEN Gallery] Comment per picture (21 posts)

I am using the [gallery=id] in a post. When clicking on a picture a subpage will be opened.

Q1: Is it possible to place comments to a subpage (read: picture) instead of commenting to the main post/page (read: gallery)?

Q2: Is it possible to show the number of comments (to the subpage) under each picture on in main post/page?

    regards!

No, this is currently not possible. For such a approch you should use the WP2.5 inbuilt gallery system

Couldn't you just make each photo some sort of "post" and have an option to display the image on a separate page (more or less like a post with just the image, title etc) - then one just could simply use WP's inbuilt comment system.

Comments per image is an important thing.

If i mod it in i'll let you know. :)

Couldn't you just borrow some code from the WPPA gallery plugin?

Maybe, someone should play with it. I have other things on my list, but I'm open for changes/addon's

It's kinda strange.. with the vast amount of people using the WordPress platform one should think that someone had mod it in.

Personally i've modded so that you see the current albums Title when your browsing it (aka when one see all the thumbnails) and i've also added a simple "Go back" under it so that people more easily can well.. go back.

Oh, and i've also edited the dashboard to include a simple step-by-step guide on how to add a gallery, change image size of the images in that gallery, set the watermark etc etc.. so that new users OR people that are just aren't that good with computers more easily actually can begin using the Nextgen Gallery via that guide. :)

Those are just simple hacks though. The current-gallery-title -thing feels very important though since it's so much more clear if people hotlink directly into a gallery or just browse it in a normal fashion.

Sound good and interestings changes... "Go back" should be in the next version. It's a private driver project and i spend as much as possible time on it, but some functions/feature are in my personal way not interested enough (doesn't me that other people also didn't need them) So if some need a new feature: do it and send me the code I will consider to integrate it into core.

It's a shame though. Nextgen Gallery is the ONLY WordPress gallery plugin that is efficient and well designed.

I played with a lot of galleries the last years. Currently I am using the WPG2 plugin, but it is sloooowww. NextGen is faaaaaaast.

The best gallery icm WordPress by far, I think. The built in WP2.5.1 gallery is too post-minded instead of pure gallery based, I think.

If *someone* finds out how to comment on individual pics, make my day :)

Until then I'll just wait 2 additional seconds to load WPG2.

    all the best

The problem seem to be that nextgen creates pages "on the fly" or "inline" for images rather then making them real wordpress pages. This of course being when one ticks the option (in admin) to use the imagebrowser instead of the effect.

Someone with more php coding experience should be able to check functions.php (plugin root) and determine what changes needs to be done in order to make comments work per "image-browser-page".

    Ok,

i'm working on this one, cause i need it, too.

My way is to create a new small plugin to combine a nextGen-gallery with the WP-Comment feature.

This will result in an automatic creation of single pages.
    1. You create your gallery
    2. Select the gallery
    3. Automatic creation of N pages linking forward and backwards, having comment-feature enabled.

if you have a gallery with about 200 pictures - you'll get 200 pages. make sure this is okay for you :)

    contact me, if interested...

Juro83, this is exactly what I need! I want to use the imagebrowser setting so people can comment on individual pictures, but since it's all the "same page" the comments are all displayed together, for every image. Same page, different image displayed. I'd also love to add a star rating field for each, but same problem.. the ratings are shared with every photo. If someone (you?) could write something that forces the creation of one real page per full image view, I would be so happy!!

bairey, my plugin is nearly completed.
Just working on a mini-thumbnail grid that links each thumbnail to the page.

    What I've done is simple:
You simply choose one gallery and one parent-page and then click on "create".
Then - lets say about 50 pages (1 per photo) are created and linked forward and backwards.
another page is created as parent of all those pages (to keep overview about all these pages).
this single page contains the mini-image-grid and the parent of this page is the one you choose.
so you might have 3 layers:
    2009
    - Swimming
    --- Picture 1
    --- Picture 2
    --- ...
    - Shopping
    --- Picture 1
    ...

You just have to link from 2009 to the Swimming or Shopping page... maybe simply by listing with dots or even by linking via one picture.

I'll upload it and give a bit support - but no guarantee - so please test it first with "few" pics and at best in a testenvironment...

    Hi Juro,

Thanks for the plugin. I tested it and I'm not really sure if having to create multiple pages is ideal. I was thinking more dynamic and more fluid with WP?

What if you need to add new photos, do you have to re-create the pages to show the changes?

What if you need to remove a photo?

There has to be a more efficient way of adding the commenting feature...

GREAT job though. For sure ;)

    Hi Andre,

yes, you are completely right with your argumentation.

There are more disadvantages with my method (i.e. you get loads of pages, ...)

But there are also some plusses:

    • No reinvention of the wheel: Use WordPress-Comment Functions/Plugins/Tables; Use Nextgen-Image Upload- and Management/Configuriation
    • Minimal resources needed (the created pages only contain some action-tag)
    • No extra Database Tables
    • Source code is small and handy
    • Fast solution (I worked about 7 hours on it including conception)

I'm open for ideas but i'd only do a complete reinvention in a team. so if you or anybody is interested just contact me.

Btw: a few days ago i included an "update" feature to synchronize pages with current gallery information.

    Regards
    Roman
