   I did the automatic upgrade 2 - 3 days ago, and now the names of the plugins are missing from the admin panel. All else seems to be working, incl. upgrading plugins.

   Any ideas?

   You might want to download 2.8 manually and try re-uploading the folders /wp-includes and /wp-admin

   First time hearing this.

   The plugins appear, but without name? Try installing a new plugin and see how it works.

   If the same happens, then I'll try a new WordPress installation, copying everything except plugins directory. Doing this, all your plugins will deactivate. Then, I will reinstall them one by one.

   removing all plugins, running a re-install & re-installing all the plugins fixed it.
