   The plugin was very easy to use, but it did not change a thing in the category management area or on the sidebar of the website.

   It won't change the order anywhere in the Admin area (except on the ordering page) and you either have to modify your theme's wp_list_categories call to use "orderby=order" or swap out the built in Categories widget with the My Category Order widget.

   You have to switch widgets or modify your theme. That's about all I can tell you without more information.

   I tried to include selected categories in the widget but it always returns to category id 1 (uncategorized). Any idea?

   Is the Uncategorized checkbox checked?
