markdown formatting is removed when importing from MovableType into WordPress via this plugin.
most annoying of all, whitespace lines are removed as well. so posts just become huge blobs of text.

I ran into this as well and came up with a quick solution, pipe your Movable Type export through the following script before importing into WordPress:
