I setting up a private members-only site. I need to be able to let my forum posters attach the following formats; PDF, Word, Excel, etc.

Any way to allow other attachment file-types other than images?

The same here. Attaching nothing but images is just not enough for my needs!

I haven't found a working solution from the forums yet. Maybe activating this thread a bit might attract someone who could give a simple answer?

Or should I check out some other forum plugins? Any suggestions?

    J.

I've been searching for and testing several forum options that work well within WordPress, but really haven't found any that integrate with my theme style the way I would like.

Tried all the typical forum solutions but they are either too complex for my needs or too limiting in terms of features. bbPress comes close (with some add-ons), but not the easiest to style for some.

I am now looking at integrating google groups into my WordPress theme as an alternative.

    Hmmm...
There seems to be a Google Groups widget (http://wordpress.org/extend/plugins/google-groups-widget/), but it hasn't been updated for over two years.
I'm looking for an easy, forum-type of solution for sharing files and discussion. It doesn't have to be visually attractive, just very easy to use and functional. Most of the users will probably be a bit fearful towards technology - at least that seems to be the starting point for many...
But bbPress sounds interesting. Have to look more closely to it.

The problem with using google groups is it requires my members to login to their google account to view the groups page (if I want to keep it private, which I do).

I'm currently using Theme My Login http://wordpress.org/extend/plugins/theme-my-login/ "Security" module to manage user login which requires users to be logged in to view the site. I really don't want users to have to login twice.
