You can try creating thumbnail and link to it, then the image won't load.
For Blogspot Blogger, there is a fix with the script http://simplexdesign.blogspot.com/2011/03/lightbox-auto-show-image.html to remove the s1600-h. So please, implement this to work with all image links.
