I'm relatively new to WordPress, but I've developed for the web before and have learned a lot in the past few weeks. I've got a few interrelated questions:
- Photon looks to be an amazing tool/service, especially considering I'm hosting my site on a makeshift server. Taking some load off, and dynamically resizing images is very attractive. In fact, it seems too attractive to be free for much longer, so I'm reluctant to start using it. Any idea what the odds are of it remaining free? Cloud storage isn't cheap!
- Are there any alternatives that can be run locally? I found a related thread with no answers. I know WordPress has a built-in resizing mechanism, and I've read about TimThumb, but I'm not sure how easy it is to integrate them to work like Photon or if either of them can cache requests. Specifically, I'm trying to use it with Tiled Galleries but I'm not sure the best way to embed images site-wide.
- I have had problems when trying Photon out, specifically with the Tiled Galleries feature (Photon module is disabled). Large images (~10MP) are not producing thumbnails for my gallery. I pulled the image link out of the generated HTML and I get the following message when I paste it in my browser's address bar: "We cannot complete this request, remote data was invalid"
I have seen other threads related to that specific message, with no specific solution. I thought it may have something to do with an "Under Construction" plugin I have installed (to keep people off my site while I develop it), but small images still work, and even after disabling it (and all other plugins, for that matter) and uploading a new picture (new filename, too) I get the same problem. The direct URL to the image on my server loads just fine for me!
I can reproduce the problem by uploading a new large image, but if I hit the wp.com link enough times, the image will typically load, and then it works fine. I'll provide a link for someone to investigate, but it will likely start working eventually:
I have the cutting-edge JetPack 2.1.2 as of today. Thanks in advance for any help or advice!
