If I load a post for the first time with issuupress embedded and I haven't selected any file to display, the display area shows up but with no content in it. It isn't obvious that the user needs to scroll down the page to select a file - instead it just looks like an empty page because I have the embed set to 600px high. Is there any way to not display an empty area if no files are selected?

Have you updated cache? I has similair issue and after refresh of cache (in the issuupress settings) it worked for me.

Normally it should display the first by default. Show me a link where i can see the problem.
