So I love the concept of IntenseDebate and I hope to see it updated soon and further integrated with WordPress. I would like to know, however, a little more about how it works, exactly.

It seems to sit “on top” of my existing WordPress install and is giving me a little bit of a headache. While it is working find, if I disable the plugin for a moment, I notice that there are suddenly thousands of unmoderated comments (100% spam) in my default WordPress comments (along with thousands of spam messages) even though I still have askimet enabled.

I’m not sure exactly what is happening, but my database size was ballooning because of it. Is there anyway for IntenseDebate to completely take over, or do I have to disable it from time to time to deal with the WordPress comments “underneath?”

    Unfortunately, that’s a known issue.

It will be fixed in an upcoming release, but you’ll have to deactivate IntenseDebate to manage your WordPress spam comments for now.

for me it also happen with pending comments too, not just with spam.
By now i have 4 pending comments and 3 comments spam on my WP dashboard awaiting moderation and i can do nothing.

    Thanks

I was hoping to see IntenseDebate integrated with Jetpack, but alas. I assume it’s forthcoming. Can you offer us any news?

    Thanks.

simbian, no news on that yet. For now, you can moderate comments by temporarily disabling IntenseDebate, or handle moderation through IntenseDebate.com. Sorry about that!

drokkon, there are no concrete plans, but it may be added in future.

Thanks, James. Can you confirm if IntenseDebate is being actively developed at all? I’ll need to choose between it and Disqus for upcoming projects; while I like IntenseDebate more, I’m concerned that it has been abandoned.

It’s still under active development. 🙂

My theory is as follows. Intense Debate works by replacing your WordPress standard Comment System through javascript. But if a visitor OR spam bot comes to your blog with Javascript disabled – they will be presented with a standard WordPress Comment System provided by your blog. Therefore the comments showing as SPAM on the main dashboard page were most likely left via the standard comment form not through intense debate. Becuase of this we still need to have antispam plugins enabled to deal with this & that is why they don’t show with ID activated. When I installed ID I deactivated GASP (Growmap Anti Spambot Plugin) as I thought I wouldn’t need it. After some experimenting to try & figure this out I have just re-activated GASP which gave me virtually no spam before ID installation so I will see if this proves my theory.
Hope this helps (unless I am wrong with my theory :-))

Well that would make sense, and it would stand to reason that the best option would be to be able to turn off WordPress commenting ENTIRELY underneath IntenseDebate.

I’m working on a few new blogs and will be looking into advanced commenting systems again soon. I sure hope that Automattic either 1) updates the ID plugin, 2) integrates an updated version of ID with Jetpack or 3) replaces the WP comment system with ID in a future WP release SOON, otherwise I may have to go the dark side (Disqus).

    Thanks!
