I tried to install the Maintenance Mode plugin and got this message after putting in my username/pass, etc.
Username/Password incorrect for admin
I have checked my password and username, I have even gone so far as to change my password. Nothing works it still says its incorrect.
Help?

I am having the same exact issue. I have downloaded and zipped all of the pluginsI want, go to the upload page, get to the "Connection information Page", Hostname: localhost, username: admin, Password: xxxxx. I know my password, I can log onto the dashboard fine, why is it saying my username/password are incorrect?
This also happens when I try to use the quick install as wel.

I can confirm that this problem is ongoing. New installation of 2.9 No custom plugins. Double checked user and password info. What is causing this? Its a major problem.
Thanks.

OK,
I got this far:
http://wordpress.org/support/topic/338277?replies=5
Use ftp login information rather than wp -- but I don't recall this kind of problem with any install before this fresh 2.9 one. But I am still not getting an install of any theme or plugin. The install seems to hang up.
I tried resetting the permissions on the WP-content folder to 777, but still doesn't work. Anyone have a clue?
Thanks.

Oops, I got it. On top of the other confusions, it seems the site was experiencing a downtime. But the first new theme is now installed.
So, if anyone happens on this thread with this problem, here are the two critical things to remember:
1) Use your FTP user name and password;
2)Reset the permissions on your wp-content folder to 777.
Cheers,
Roger
