Trying to manage plugins and install a new one I get the following message

Warning: An unexpected error occurred. Something may be wrong with WordPress.org or this server’s configuration. If you continue to have problems, please try the support forums. (WordPress could not establish a secure connection to WordPress.org. Please contact your server administrator.) in /home/u544618065/public_html/wp-admin/includes/plugin-install.php on line 77

This since the automatic updating tomfoolery got included. My server doesn't do ssl.

Try downloading the plugin. Then unzip and upload to the Plugins folder (wp-content/plugins/) using an SFTP / FTP client.

See this page for more information:

I have been using WordPress since version 1.8 (if not before)...

It seems to have righted itself - why and how, I have no idea.
