[Plugin: Google XML Sitemaps] The google xml sitemaps nearly killed my site. How to erase it totally (4 posts)

I tried installing the Google-Sitemap-Generator on my site, it wouold not give me permission to write files (I followed all instructions on creating it manually to no avail) so I decided to deinstall it. First I thought it would be a good idea to "reset settings" which led to a "error connecting to database error". I did not panic, instead I deleted the plugin through http://ftp...which did not work, and I still could not access my site. Now I started to panic. Anyway, some 30 minutes later everything seems fine again though.

I am not gonna touch this plugin with a pole again (it is worthy to note that on my test site which use excactly the same theme, but is on a different server the plugin worked well) and want to make sure that every trace of it is gone. Did it install anything besides in its subfolders?

I also read that Iridiax somwehere said that a sitemap is not really needed for wordpress users unless they have a site which no page is linked to. I have the utmost respect for Iridax and have decided to simply ignore creating a sitemap ( I all ready have a html sitemap anyway for human visitors). And I guess the tagging system alone makes sure every post is linked too (provided you use it)?

    Cheers.

The plugin is broken after wp 2.6. Still have't found an update yet. Other than that it work great. I'm very sad that I created so many pages over here: cars.apmart.com just to find out the site map wasn't active.

You are right about the search engine index, if you have external links, you won't need sitemap. However I still need one because not all of my pages have external links, and not always the SE know when to revisit my pages.

    Good luck to us.

Actually, this plugin works great with 2.6.2 and even with the latest bleeding-edge 2.7. I've been using it for ages, never had a problem.

And the Google sitemap, while not necessary, is invaluable at preventing search engines from crawling my site too often. Google used to hit every bloody page on some of my sites every day. Annoying, but with a sitemap, it now only hits the ones that change the most often.

vagabond72, looks like your database was offline for a while, thats why you received an "error connecting to database error" error and after 30 minutes your host fixed the problem and your site was available again. Some people might have problems with the plugin, but there a many thousands of users who don't. I can't reproduce every problem and some are very hard to fix or caused by special server configurations.
