   I'm running v3.2.5 of the plugin and it seems the only time it generates the sitemap file is when I do it manually. I just checked my XML file and the last time it was generated was 5 days ago despite dozens of new posts being published on the site.

   Here are my settings:

   Should I disable building it as a background process?

   Still nothing?
   I saw your settings, by the way I tick gzipped file too!
   Build the sitemap in a background process - it's good one.

   But what about your rest settings? Have you finished the ticks down the settings page? Content, Priorities, Frequencies...
