I have tried many times to get the plugin to write the sitemap.xml following the instructions from the faq but nothing has worked.

I've created the sitemap.xml and sitemap.xml.gz in my /wordpress folder, which is the root of my blog that contains the wp-config.php file as indicated in the installation instructions.

I've done chmod 755 and even 777 on both files, and confirmed their changes with the stat command and in the file system that they have the correct permissions.

I've manually put in the absolute path including file name and url location of the sitemap file in the "Location of your sitemap file" settings.

All times the plugin gives me an error stating to make sure the files exist and are writable.

I've seen other users state to have the same problem and Arne asks them to use the beta version, however according to this post:

the beta version is not suitable for a production environment which I will be uploading to once I have my local copy of production working with this plugin, so I want to avoid the beta if this is still the case.

Does anyone have any ideas what might be happening?

Could you please try out the new beta version? It doesn't use static files anymore so your problem should be gone :)

As I've stated, according to your post here: http://wordpress.org/support/topic/plugin-google-xml-sitemaps-early-testers-wanted
this beta version is not suitable for production environments, which is exactly where it will go once I have been able to install and configure this plugin, so is there anyway to make the current plugin work correctly? Or is the beta version of this plugin now suitable for production environments?
