    Hi all,

I'm creating my first website using WP and read that the Google XML Sitemaps plugin is a must-have. In the directions for installation, there is this:

'Use your favorite FTP program to create two files in your WordPress directory (that's where the wp-config.php is) named sitemap.xml and sitemap.xml.gz and make them writable via CHMOD 666.'

The problem is, I'm not sure how to make those xml files. I'm using FileZilla and there doesn't seem to be a way to create files. Is it simply a matter of finding another FTP program that does, or am I missing something completely?

Let's say that you downloaded most common Google XML Sitemap Generator i.e. http://wordpress.org/extend/plugins/google-sitemap-generator/ this plugin will create/generate both xml and xml.gz files for you, however if your hosting company doesn't have proper CHMOD permissions, they will not be created, or they will but the plugin will not generate anything in them.

This is what you can try. Open notepad, create blank file and save as sitemap.xml upload to your root directory. Same thing with another file, this time save as sitemap.xml.gz. Done you're all set.

Give them permissions so that the plugin can write things in it. Make sure that you go to your plugin settings and create the sitemap for the first time, or if you already did this, click on rebuild the sitemap.

    Cheers,
    Emil
