I created the sitemap.xml and sitemap.xml.gz in my ftp and gave them 777 permission.

Then activated the plugin and get this error.

    # There was a problem writing your sitemap file. Make sure the file exists and is writable. Learn more
    # There was a problem writing your zipped sitemap file. Make sure the file exists and is writable. Learn more

I tried putting in a custom location for the path and url, but that still didn't help.

Using Bluehost and have my site hosted on a subdomain. I put the sitemap files in the root folder of the wordpress install. Should I move them to the root folder, public_html?

The files should not have 777 permissions on BlueHost. Change them to 755.
Try putting them in the root of your install. If WordPress is installed in public_html, then put them there. If it is installed in another folder, then put them there.

I tried both - recreating the sitemaps in both WP root folder and in public_html with 755 permissions. I reactivated the plugin and it still can't write the files. It seems to detect the correct files in the WordPress folder, but still reports a problem and won't write the files.

I used http://www.xml-sitemaps.com/ to create sitemaps, which should do for now. I tried to get the plugin to work with these sitemaps, but it wouldn't overwrite them.

Can anyone offer further guidance to get this plugin working?

You shouldn't need to create actual sitemaps, you merely need to have two blank files in the root of your install, one named sitemap.xml and another named sitemap.xml.gz

It shouldn't interfere, but just to make sure, check your Settings > Media page as well. Make sure that your site is set to store uploads in the wp-content/uploads directory. There shouldn't be any slash before or wp-content, or after uploads.

Even with blank files in the root, it won't detect or overwrite them.

The settings for the uploads are the default, as bh_WP_fan stated above.

My current solution is to create sitemaps using http://www.xml-sitemaps.com/ - but this means I'll have to recreate them manually every time I make a change in the site.

I did the same. I'm going to try another plug-in. I'll write here if it will work.

I have found the problem. The path to the xml file was incorrect. I installed another plugin "BWP Google XML Sitemaps", it detects the path to the web site files on your server automaticaly, so I just made copy - paste of it in to Google XML Sitemaps, and it works now! So, do the same - i think it will help.
